What are the best things to do in Sardinia?“

Where should I go first? Please, give me an idea of what to do as I don’t know where to start!

Being a local, born and raised in Sardinia, so many people ask me in person, via email, comments or even pigeons carrying messages sometimes, the one million dollar question: What things/places can’t I absolutely miss in Sardinia?!

I stare at them, shaking my head as these are such broad questions, and how in the heavens would I know if someone prefers to enjoy their vacation  in one of Sardinia best beaches or spend their time in the lovely traditional villages, eating local food, spending their days popping from boat trips to another or hiking? See my dilemma here? I wanted to help but… HOW?

Then, I realized that people (like you probably)  would simply love to have a general idea of what are, from a local’s perspective,  the best activities you can’t miss when visiting Sardinia. So, because of these non-stop requests, I decided to write this article, to make sure you know what are the must-see Sardinia point of interest.

Below I  put together my personal top list of awesome things to do in Sardinia, so that you will have an idea of what you can’t miss and, if you have enough time, you can plan on ticking all of them, if not… after your first visit you will probably schedule several follow-ups trips over the years!  (I’m warning you, it happens more often than not) πŸ˜‰

IMPORTANT INFORMATION!

Being my personal top list, I will be mixing things to do all over Sardinia, (which is quite big). To know more about the things to do in specific areas, I have a massive and super detailed article with 9 itineraries for visiting Sardinia in one week (Including maps). I strongly suggest you to first read this one to get a general idea and then check out the other, otherwise, it could be a very overwhelming experience! πŸ™‚

1| DISCOVER THE GOLFO DI OROSEI

Check out this video I created to show you the most jaw-dropping beaches in the Golfo di Orosei!

The Golfo di Orosei, located in the East Coast of Sardinia, has great hiking and trekking trails  in between the sea and the mountains and amazing views over the pristine turquoise waters is definitely one of the top places to visit in Sardinia.

The Island counts almost 2000 km of coastline with some of the most beautiful beaches in Europe (and in the world). I have compiled a list of my Top 10 Sardinia beaches and if you are interested in knowing which ones are the best from a local’s perspective, give it a read! My favorite (of course!) is Cala Mariolu, located in the Golfo Di Orosei. Not a coincidence!

Best Golfo Di Orosei Boat Trips !

Are you based in the Golfo di Orosei and you don’t want to miss the fabulous beaches only reachable by boat? Explore it with this hop-on-hop-off mini Cruise departing from Santa Maria Navarrese. Book Here!

sardinia-tours-boat-trip-golfo-di-orosei-cala-goloritze-beach

If you are already around the area, just stop at one of the local agencies (or the pier kiosks) and purchase your ticket in there. Preferably a few days before the date you want to avoid the „sorry we are fully booked“ nightmare!

Either way, you HAVE to try this experience, it’s one of the best things to do in Sardinia. Period! I have done it several times and this summer I kept going there for more!

Cala Mariolu is only reachable by boat, even if there is also a trekking path, but I won’t recommend it because it’s only suitabble for experts hikers. The beauty of this “touristic place in Sardinia” is the wild location, the mix in between the pristine sea, the rocks and vegetation behind it.

Be careful because in Cala Mariolu beach there is no sand but small pebbles so I recommend you to wear good shoes to avoid hurting your feet. You can also take scuba diving classes and dive on the same day in the area. There are a few interesting grottos underneath the rock formations in the water (nothing dangerous) and it’s an additional fun activity you could try, other than relaxing and snorkeling.

NOTE: CALA MARIOLU RESTRICTIONS UPDATE 2019/2020:  From 2018, to avoid hordes of tourists overcrowding the beach in high season (and also low season if the weather holds), the boats stopping in Cala Mariolu have been reduced and the tourists can only stay 3 hours max. Before this rule was applied, it was possible to ask the captain of your boat to stay the whole day and get picked up at the end of the trip. Not anymore.

IMPORTANT ENVIRONMENTAL NOTE FOR BEACHES ALL OVER SARDINIA:

Please do not collect any sand/shells/pebbles from the beach! It is strictly forbidden (yes not even ONE) and you can be fined heavily. Please respect the environment and leave them where they belong, but always remember to take any trash with you when you leave. Let’s keep Sardinia paradise clean. Thank you!

THINGS TO DO IN CALA MARIOLU/GOLFO DI OROSEI

Scuba Diving/Free Diving

As previously stated, you can dive in Cala Mariolu, so if you already have the license, bring it with you, or pay to get certified on the spot. Bonus, they will give you a pen drive with a video and pictures of your experience!

OTHER GREAT THINGS TO DO

Rock Jumping

Golfo di Orosei area is very wild, and some of the rocks, especially in the famous Cala Goloritzè beach, are perfect for rock jumping. I recommend trying to jump from the famous arch, but always be careful and have fun! DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DO IT IF YOU ARE NOT A GOOD CLIMBER!

2| VISIT THE GLAMOROUS COSTA SMERALDA

sardinia_nest_things_to_do_activities_beaches_costa_smeralda_hotels_resorts_accommodation_sardinia

Costa Smeralda is one of the most popular places in Sardinia and within reason: Beautiful emerald seas, stunning beaches and panoramic views, enchanted villages and lovely bays.

Located in the Northeast part of Sardinia with the Olbia Costa Smeralda airport at minutes by car from Porto Cervo and Porto Rotondo is one of the most sought after places for a Holiday in Sardinia. Keep reading to see the most amazing things you can do in Costa Smeralda!

Best Costa Smeralda Trips!

A Must-do Activity, The Arcipelago Della Maddalena Boat trip is, hands down, the best in north east Sardinia. You’ll stop in the most beautiful beaches around and in a place called „the pools“. You’ll thank me later πŸ™‚  Book Here!

WHY IS THE COSTA SMERALDA SO POPULAR?

Porto-Cervo-village-Sardinia-costa-smeralda

Beautiful little and colorful plaza in Porto Cervo Village – Costa Smeralda

Despite the fact that, as a local, I consider the Costa Smeralda to be a part of Sardinia that has no real Island traditions, it’s almost impossible not to love it. Even the Aga Khan fell in love with this paradise and decided to buy it (hence the lack of Sardinian Culture in there).

But all in all, if you’re looking for a smashing vacation, jaw-dropping beaches, great nightlife and parties, celebrity spotting and great resorts and villas with panoramic views, this is the place you need to be!

CHEAP VACATIONS IN COSTA SMERALDA?

sardinia-best-things-to-do-activities-beaches-costa_smeralda-hotels-resorts-sardinia

Costa Smeralda Is considered one of the most expensive areas in Sardinia (if not the most expensive), BUT… at age 19, as a penniless student, I was still able to stroll around the enchanting Porto Cervo, sipping a drink on the pier while watching the luxury Yatches in the marina. So Costa Smeralda, with a little bit of flexibility and creativity is also accessible on a lower budget! More info in a comprehensive guide coming up!

COSTA SMERALDA: TOP THINGS TO DO AND SEE

Capo D’Orso View

capo-d'orso-view-from-the-rock-things-to-do-in-sardinia-costa-smeralda

Capo D’orso rock is an unmissable spot when in Costa Smeralda. This famous Rock, shaped in the form of a bear, towers over the nearby Porto Cervo village, with awesome views on the coastal areas around. The parking space costs 3 euros as well as the entrance fee. Totally worth it. Be sure you are fit enough for the fairly easy climb.

Poltu Quatu Village

Sardinia_things_to_see_and_do_in-Costa_smeralda_porto_cervo_porto_rotondo_poltu-quatu

Poltu Qualtu literally means „hidden port“ and it’s a must see village in Costa Smeralda. It has majestic views over the Arcipelago della Maddalena. Not only the village itself is lovely wth gracious little plazas and restaurants, but the activities are what makes a visit really worth it: dolphins, see turtles and even whales in their natural habitat can be easily spotted in here!

3| SARDINIA BEACHES: WINDSURF AT CHIA BEACH

sardinia-things-to-do-in-the-south-coast-chia-windsurf-and-water-sports

A visit to Sardinia wouldn’t be 100% complete if you haven’t seen at least one small Nuraghe. What are they?Very ancient stone constructions built during the bronze era, usually for defensive purposes. The one in Barumini has been declared UNESCO SITE (here in the list of their official website)

Best Tours Near Chia!

Are you based in south Sardinia and you want to discover some of the best hidden beaches by jeep (Also including Chia?) Check out this awesome trip departing from Cagliari Town. Book Here and skip the lines!

jeep-trip-hidden-beaches-near-chia

Chia Su Giudeu Beach is one of the most popular ones in South Sardinia. Not only the beach is massive both in lenght and dept (people can easily play football in the back without dsturbing anyone) but it’s also super popular for its water sports, especially Windsurf and Kite Surf.

The locaton is perfect because the beach is in a position where winds blow into the open sea making it a paradise for watersport lovers.

There are other places nearby for this, for example Capo Spartivento or Spiaggia Del Morto, but Su Giudeu is the best equipped. You can rent out the gear in the local kiosks and it’s pretty convenient.

OTHER THINGS TO DO AND SEE NEAR CHIA BEACH

Cala Cipolla Mini Hike

sardinia-south-coast-things-to-do-and-see-cala-cipolla-beach-near-chia-su-giudeu-

A few minutes by foot from Chia beach, you can easily climb the small hill on the right and reach the more secluded Cala Cipolla beach („Onion Cove“ … don’t ask me why!). I highly recommend to pay a quick visit even if you are staying at Su Giudeu beach.

You can admire the tall Lighthouse and, on the left of the beach you can climb down the rocks and even jump. The pristine water is shallow (just like it is in Chia) so it’s very safe for the kids to swim and play on the shore too.

Tuerredda (till Sunset)

sardinia-things-to-do-in-the-south-coast-tuerredda-beach-near-chia-at-sunset-activities-and-hotels-

Tuerredda is my favorite beach in South Sardinia. Unfortunately is pretty crowded during summertime. Just 20 min further from Chia, gong towards Domus De Maria and Teulada, Tuerredda’s water is unbelievably turquoise and pristine.

The rocky sides of the beach also make for an interesting area where to snorkel and fish. The parking fee is ridiculously high (for the whole day 6 Euros, half day 3 Euros) but I can’t help myself and I usually go there every summer!

BEST HOTELS NEAR CHIA BEACH

PULA HOTELS

Pula or Santa Margherita di Pula, are the closest and best equipped towns near Chia Beach (around 20 minutes by car). The town is populated by locals all year aroud so you’ll find shops, supermarket and anything you need for your vacation.

CHIA HOTELS

If you want to stay in a Resort in front of Chia beach, no problem, the option is available and, might I add, also dreamy! Check for yourself in here: all the comforts you need to have a smashing and relaxing all inclusive holiday in Sardinia.

 4| PISCINAS HUGE SAND DUNES

sardinia_best_things_to_do_piscinas_dunes_hotels_resorts_tours_accommodations_beaches_sardinia

Important premise! Many people confuse Piscinas (the town) with Piscinas Beach, which are quite far apart from each other! So to make your life easier, here is a map  to show you where Piscinas beach, and the town with the same name are πŸ™‚

PISCINAS-PISCINAS-BEACH-SARDINIA-MAP

As you can see they are almost 2 hours away from each other! If you use a navigator, make sure to set it to the right one πŸ˜‰

Piscinas and Scivu beach are two of the most suggestive on the West Coast of Sardinia, with the first (Piscinas) comminly known as the beach with the highest sand dunes in Europe.

To give you an idea on how beautiful these places are I found a video on Youtube that (set aside for the music πŸ˜‰ ) is pretty amazing. Check it out and then I’ll tell you how to reach these places by car from Cagliari!

As you can see both beaches are stunning, with a magnficent view of the sunset. Piscinas is one of the best, as you can climb up a dune and enjoy the show mother nature puts up every day from that vantage point!

These beaches are also super famous for kite surfers and windsurfers because of the winds (especially Scivu: if you go during a windy day, you’ll find yourself surrounded by dozens of colorful kites!)

IMPORTANT SECURITY NOTE: This is valid almost everywhere over the west coast beaches, but for Piscinas and Scivu especially, the water becomes deep very quickly and there are a few strong underwater currents so please use caution when swimming and keep an eye on the kids at all times and only allow them to stay on the shore.

Some days the waves are also quite high, which makes it very difficult to stay in the water. If you want to have some fun playing it’s ok, but don’t go too far, just stick to an area very close to the shore (and use a quite sturdy and secure bikini!!)

HOW TO GET TO PISCINAS AND SCIVU FROM CAGLIARI BY CAR:

Sardinia-map-how-to-get-to-piscinas-beach

Quick Note: I suggest you use the navigator because it’s not super intuitive and in the end, getting close to Piscinas, the road gets pretty rough with a few km of no paved terrain. That said, you’ll be completely immersed in the wilderness and it’s going to be an amazing adventure!

The same can be said about Scivu, below a map on how to get there. (It’s not worth it to drive from Piscinas to Scivu or Viceversa, there is no direct road and you’ll have to go back and waste quite sometimes.

PISCINAS AND SURROUNDINGS: BEST THINGS TO DO AND SEE

Scivu Kitesurfing

One of the best places to practice your favorite watersports in West Sardinia is definitely Scivu! As already mentioned, this place is literally a paradise for Kite Surfers, Windsurfers and also surfers, so whatever you’re into…you won’t be disappointed!

Montevecchio Mines

sardinia-things-to-do-montevecchio-mines-near-piscinas

If you are into cultural sights too, the Sulcis area is quite interesting for its past as a minerary site. You can book a ticket or more to follow some interesting paths and discover the ancient mines of Montevecchio. A side of Sardinia that  we like to preserve and show to the tourists!

HOTELS IN PISCINAS – SOUTHWEST COAST

PISCINAS BEACH HOTELS

To reach Piscinas and Scivu beaches I recommend to either find accommodation directly in Cagliari and go there for a day trip or if you want to try something more local, to find a Hotel/B&B in Arbus.

CAGLIARI HOTELS

Unless you want to dedicate your vacation entirely to Piscinas/Scivu/Buggerru and the South West Coast of Sardinia, your best bet is to find accommodation in Cagliari, below a link to all the offers for every budget!

You can certainly visit the Barumini Nuraghe Complex on your own if you rent a car but since I went there the last time things have changed a bit. Around 30 years ago, you didn’t have to pay to enter, then after a few years, you had to pay a small fee to be able to roam around free.

Now it is not possible anymore, due to security reasons and to preserve the structures, you can only go accompanied by a guide. The complex is open every day and the ticket for the entrance for 2018 is 12 euros for adults and 9 for kids aged below 18. Visiting hours are as stated below:
